Power in Silence: ‘Northern Star’

What: Non-linear film
Location: LA via Dublin

Do true stories really have clean arcs with a beginning, middle and end? Or do our lives feel more like just a series of rooms, with open-ended ideas and unresolved tension?

Indie film Northern Star recreates this experience with a non-linear series of vignettes that handles the importance of slowing down and being present with one another. We’re by the sea, feeling the rhythm of the waves. Then we’re in a cramped kitchen, where a woman describes having sex with her husband out of obligation, not desire. We pull back again to a silent, breezy landscape. Smash to a lunch date that questions the point of small talk, if the goal is authentic connection. Over and again, isolated wide shots are paired with tense interiors, and silence with brutal honesty. Punch in, release. Punch in, release.
