Laura discusses inequalities among the Autism Community to highlight and support World Mental Health Day: Mental Health in an Unequal World.
Laura is a mother, lecturer, and Autism Consultant who is going to discuss the difficulty autistic children have accessing mental health services as they are too often rejected due to their diagnosis. Autism is seen as the primary diagnosis and so the autism teams are supposed to cater to all needs but they lack mental health professionals and so our children are often completely adrift. The very diagnosis that is supposed to open doors is the one thing that shuts them. Between 40-70% of autistic individuals experience anxiety disorders, far higher than the general population and yet they are so often excluded from mental health services.
Laura will provide statistics that portray these harrowing inequalities among the autism community.
